We aim to provide a practical synthesis of our ever-increasing segmented and socially unjust world, with new societies formed within the shell of the old.
In a traditional sense, an atrium brings forth an architectural image of open spaces assisting light and ventilation to an interior. In an anatomical sense, an atrium is one of the necessary parts of the heart which assists in completing the cycle of deoxygenated/oxygenated blood in the body. In either case, an atrium is an important aspect of their specific systems: a rhizomatic function (non-hierarchically).
Like the architectural atrium which assists in transferring light and air to an interior, Atrium Press strives to empower the perspectives and experiences of those who are systemically disenfranchised. Like the anatomical atrium of the heart, Atrium Press is just one of the necessary apparatuses in a system which wants to genuinely live and love.
We neither seek — nor desire — fortune, fame, or power. The real leaders are those who are disenfranchised and disempowered. We humbly yet passionately seek to be accomplices in combating social injustice and making genuine, meaningful change. Our hope is that Atrium Press will become a collective virtual and physical space for radical left politics to share ideas, resources, and to build (inter)national networks that support local, grassroots activism. We believe in mutual aid and practical action to defend all oppressed peoples, by any useful means at our collective disposal.
"True generosity consists precisely in fighting to destroy the causes which nourish false charity. False charity constrains the fearful and subdued, the 'rejects of life,' to extend their trembling hands. True generosity lies in striving so that these hands—whether of individuals or entire peoples—need be extended less and less in supplication, so that more and more they become human hands which work and, working, transform the world."
— Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed
